Archaea

WHAT ARE ARCHAEA?

WHAT DISEASES DO THEY CAUSE?

Archaea were thought to be bacteria, until 1978, when they got their own category. They are characterized by their ability to tolerate extreme temperatures and acidity. Like bacteria, they are ancient. However, they are special in that they have plasmid membranes with lipid compositions not found in any other lifeforms.

There are four types of archaea. (T-55)

Lucky for us, as of yet, they do not cause any known diseases. (T-57)

METHANOGENS

Archaeans that produce methane gas as a part of their digestion or process of making energy.

HALOPHILES

Salt-loving archaea.

THERMOPHILES

Heat-loving archaea.

PSYCHROPHILES

Cold-loving archaea.
